Disasters
Can Happen Anytime,
Anywhere... Disaster Preparedness Begins
with You!!!
 |
If
a disaster would strike Polk County, it
could be days before help arrives and
basic services are restored. Would you and your family
be ready if that happened? Unfortunately, most
households aren't prepared even for routine water main
breaks and weather-related power outages that leave us
without utilities for two or three days. The Polk County Emergency Management along
with the emergency response community strongly urges every household to
prepare to get along for 72 hours following an
emergency with no assistance. This website is intended to provide the
people of Polk County with the tools to better prepare
themselves for disasters. |
Polk
County Emergency Shelters
Public shelters are a
refuge for those seeking
temporary safety from a
disaster or emergency.
People going to a public
shelter are doing so
because they have been
ordered to evacuate,
caught on the road away
from their home, or left
their home believing
that remaining there was
unsafe.
Shelters offer minimal
necessities. They are
often noisy and crowded.
They could be hot, or
they could be cold.
Usually they are
uncomfortable. Restroom
facilities are not like
those in your home. Food
is not gourmet and may not be on a
schedule you are
accustom.
