Polk County Emergency Shelters
Public shelters are a refuge for those seeking temporary safety from a disaster or emergency. People going to a public shelter are doing so because they have been ordered to evacuate, caught on the road away from their home, or left their home believing that remaining there was unsafe.
Shelters offer minimal necessities. They are often noisy and crowded. They could be hot, or they could be cold. Usually they are uncomfortable. Restroom facilities are not like those in your home. Food is not gourmet and may not be on a schedule you are accustom.

Polk County Invests in Special Populations Planning
From April through September of 2006, over 100 Polk County partners, including Public Health, Emergency Management, Human Services, Emergency Responders, Tribal Representatives, Private and Public Partners, Chief Elected Officials, and representatives from various Special Populations categories convened to develop the Polk County Special Populations Plan for Disasters and Emergencies. The plan identifies Special Populations within the County including guidelines for evacuation or sheltering in place of these individuals.
As a result of the plan, a Polk County Special Needs Registry was developed. The purpose of the program is to allow individuals who have serious health and medical needs within the County to register with the Polk County Emergency Management. The database will be used in disasters and emergencies to provide emergency responders with names of special needs individuals who may require assistance from emergency responders. Click here to read more about the Polk County Special Needs Registry. Similar to emergency shelters, Polk County understands that general emergency shelters may not meet the needs of certain special populations. Hence, Polk County is working on identifying and contracting with several sites within the County that can house and treat certain special populations more effectively.
