What is the Adopt-A-Highway program?
Initiated by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and developed on a local level by Polk County Highway Department, encourages volunteer groups to support the state's anti-litter program.
Each qualified group of volunteers takes responsibility for litter control on a segment of county highway. The group picks up litter on this segment at least twice a year between April 1 and November 1.
Who can Adopt-A-Highway?
Any organized group can sponsor a segment of road at least one mile in length. Two signs will be posted designating your highway segment.
It is important to be very careful when working on the roadsides. Groups do not work in dangerous areas such as medians, bridges or steep slopes. Each group must provide adult supervision for every six workers. Safety vests, work signs, trash bags, and trash removal are provided by the Highway Department.
